2.Mechanical age
In the mechanical age, it is important to discuss the following persons and devices.
- John Napier
John Napier, a Scottish man, introduced the logarithmic theory.Multiplication by this principle is very easy.He recorded these values in ivory columns.These were known as Napier Bones.
- Blaise Pascal
He is a Frenchman who invented a machine called the Pascaline.Thereby, additions and subtractions could be made.
- Gottfried Wilhelm
He is a German national. He invented a machine called the Step Reckoner.This machine can add, subtract, divide and multiply.
- Charles Babbage
He is known as the father of computers.He invented the difference engine and the analytical engine.The difference engine was able to add and subtract.Data input, deposition, processing and output are a characteristic of the analytics engine.Ada Augusta Lovelace, a friend of Charles Babbage, was interested in developing an algorithm for this machine.3.Electromechanical age
- Lee de Forest
About 1910, vacuum tubes were discovered by Lee de Forest.Vacuum tubes were used for first generation computers.
- Herman Hollerith
He invented a punched card tabulator machine around 1890.He founded the Tabulating Machine Company .It was later renamed ibm (International Business Machines Corporation).
- Howard Aiken
Howard Aiken invented the Mark 1 in about 1944.This is the first automatic computer.Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be done with this machine.
- Eniac (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer)
This machine is considered to be the world's first electronic digital computer.This machine was invented by J. Presper Eckert.
- Univac
This machine could perform 10,000 calculations per second.
- Edvac
This is the first computer to use stored programs.
